Moai buried underground!

Contrary to what was believed, Easter Island heads (Moai) are not just resting on the ground.

Thanks to the devoted work of The Easter Island Statue Project team which started digging in 2012, we now know they are huge monoliths buried underground.

But why did the builders carve body parts that are today below ground level? Are the statues much older than we think? Some like to say that it is simply due to the island volcano’s eruptions. The only issue is that, as seen on the picture, the Moai are now buried in dirt and not volcanic grounds/rock.

Could they have been originally 100% ON the ground and fully visible tens of thousands years ago, before time did its job? We can't say. But we can see.
